Adoption proves difficult for same-sex couples

Same-sex adoption is currently legal in Missouri. But Missouri advocacy groups have been working at the local level to continue promoting same-sex adoption. Families should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, says Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director of advocacy group Family Pride.

Description: "You have to look at what the individual child needs and who is best able to deliver that for them."

Chrisler says same-sex couples face more difficulty when adopting through a religiously affiliated agency, and international laws do not allow for same-sex couples to adopt children from other countries.

Intro: No legislation currently bans same-sex couples in Missouri from adopting, but advocacy groups are looking to gain support at the grass roots level to protect current gay rights.

In 2006, Missouri gay advocacy groups prepared for a legislative battle that didn't materialize.

Same-sex adoption bans were only introduced in the Ohio legislature. Even though the issue never entered the Missouri legislature, Missouri gay advocacy group PROMO polled citizens in 2006 and found statewide support for gay adoption, says PROMO Executive Director A.J. Bachelman.

Description: "It seems as if in Missouri we weren't going to be seeing any information about a potential ban on gay parenting or gay adoption."

PROMO hopes to educate people on same-sex adoption across Missouri so that if a ban arises in the next legislative session, it will fall on deaf ears.
