The committee will submit recommendations to the House Speaker in the next few weeks.
Jackson County Assessor and committee member Curtis Koons suggested that senior citizens be exempt from property taxes.

Description: "Taxes then be paid by the state with the lean be there as a state lean. And at the time, years later, when they sell the property, or if they should pass away, and the property does sell, then the taxes be made good." |
All committee members agreed that changing the tax structure benefitting education is also a high priority.

Intro: A statewide property tax was proposed to a House task force on taxes.
Beth Ford has more from Jefferson City.
The task force was appointed by the House speaker to come up with new ideas for addressing complaints about property taxes.
One member, a St. Louis County tax-protection advocate came up with a radical idea -- impose a statewide, uniform property tax of one percent.
That was the proposal from Louis Rubin:

Description: "This new system could not be changed by any county, municipality, or taxing district without a vote by the voters requiring a two-thirds majority." |
But Rubin's proposal ran into immediate questions from other members on the speaker's task force -- including questions about loss of local control and school district funding.
The task force has yet to vote on any recommendations.
