A month before the new legislative session begins, several of the newly elected state representatives and senators met for a freshmen orientation.

The new house representatives learned about internal House policy, while the beginning senators held a mock session to learn the formal etiquette on the senate floor.

Jeff Smith will be a Senator from St. Louis.  He is only one of two senators next term jumping into the Senate without beginning as a house representative.

Run Time: 00:13
Description: It's interesting working with new Senators who were previously representatives.  It will be interesting to compare my experience with theirs.

Smith said he will focus on education in the next legislative session, making his first bill a Teach for Missouri, which resembles Teach for America.

Newly-elected state representatives met at the Capitol for a freshmen orientation.  Not only did they learn about how the state House is run, but the representatives also learned about special interest groups and lobbyists.

Jackie Snyder is the Chancellor of the Metropolitan Community College District in Kansas City, who helped host the luncheon.  She says they want to work closely with the legislature to achieve education goals.

Actuality:  SYNDER.WAV
Run Time: 00:17
Description: With budget cuts over the last few years, it's important to us that representatives know our role and that state funding is helpful in making education more accessible to students.

Orientation for the representatives will last two weeks.

Newly-elected state representatives met in the Capitol to learn the perks and pitfalls of their new jobs.

They listened to speakers explaining what it means to be a state employee, hiring legislative assistants, insurance, and cafeteria programs.

Mike Talboy is the 37th district representative from Kansas City.  He said the orientation was helpful.

Actuality:  TALBOY.WAV
Run Time: 00:15
Description: It's a lot more intensive than what most people think.  There is a perception that everyone knows what to do at the Capitol, and that's not necessarily the case.

The representatives also got to learn about special interest groups as the Missouri Community College Association hosted luncheon and a presentation for them.
