Right now, certified preschool school teachers and K-12 teachers are on the same salary scale. Preschool teachers can qualify for tenure.
Senator Gibbons, the president pro-tem from Kirkwood is introducing a bill to change that.
He says preschool programs can't survive by paying teachers these salaries.
A spokesperson for the Missouri Teachers Association says without this bill, many pre-K programs in St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jackson counties won't survive.

He says many pre-K programs in St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jackson county are more like day care centers than preschools. Parents pay money for their kids to attend, even though the programs fall within the public school system.
Gibbons says early childhood teachers don't expect tenure or to get the same salary as K-12 teachers.

In St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jackson county parents pay for their kids to attend even though preschool programs fall within the public school system.
