Increased Earthquake Preparations Discussed for Missouri

Vice Chair of Missouri's Environmental Committee says Missouri needs to prepare for the worst when it comes to earthquakes.

State Senator Kevin Engler, a Republican from Farmington, says a lot of areas in the state lack a concrete plan for earthquake preparedness.

"There is supposed to be a plan designed. But one design and practicing and implementing the plan, two different subjects."

Senator Engler says many of the current plans are based on past earthquake predictions. He says the state should review those plans to make sure Missouri residents aren't caught off guard.

U.S. Senator Jim Talent and Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson are calling for more earthquake preparation in Missouri. Kristen Commander has more from the Jefferson City.

Senator Talent and Congresswoman Emerson want to schedule earthquake preparedness exercises along the New Madrid Fault Zone which runs from southeast Missouri to southern Illinois. A spokesmen for Senator Talent, Rich Chrismer, says the Senator would like to start the exercises as soon as possible.

"We just need to make sure that through these exercises that our local, state, and federal response teams are prepared to the fullest extend possible to protect lives and relieve human suffering in the event of a major earthquake."

Chrismer says Senator Talent also wants the state to re-evaluate the current earthquake preparedness programs and see what can be done to improve. Reporting from the capital, I'm Kristen Commander.
