One St. Louis area school districts new drug testing policy is starting to attract attention from districts across the state/ Jonathan Levin has more from the state Capitol.
The voluntary program requires both parents and students to attend a meeting and sign a permission form to be tested.
In the wake of it's success, the Missouri School Board Association has recently issued guidelines for other districts looking into the program.
Fort Zumwalt Superintendent Bernard DuBray says the district is relying heavily on parents to lean on their kids and get them into the voluntary program.
There is no punishment for a first positive test, the superintendent says this is more about helping the kids than punishing them.
The district has seen one of the first 75 tests thus far conducted come back positive for a recreational drug. The tests will cost the distict around $24,000 over the course of the school year.
