Blunt plans to delay $100 million in education funding

Governor Blunt is planning to defer 100 million dollars from Missouri universities.

Blunt's office announced plans to delay 100 million dollars of funding to the UM system and five other universities...something the governor hopes will help prevent a fiscal crisis.

The state will delay two-thirds of the money universities are expecting in the next three months until June.

Paul Sloca, a spokesperson for the governor, says the money will be paid back in full and the deferment's effects on the colleges will be limited.

Contents: They'll get their money back in June, and no services will be interrupted...there will be no impact on tuition or the day-to-day lives of the students at the University of Missouri or any of the other universities.

Democrats say Blunt is breaking the promise he made during the State of the State address to not cut higher education.

Columbia Senator Chuck Graham says there is no guarantee the deferred money will be returned.

Contents: I don't know that you can really promise to put that money back in at this point, because we don't know what the revenues will be like as we go through the tax season in April.

A spokesperson from the governor's office says the deferment will have no impact on tuition and that all the university presidents agreed to the plan.
