Lawmakers send governor final budget

The Missouri legistlature passed the budget today (Thursday), cutting 90,000 Missourians from the medicaid program.

Lawmakers sent the governor a final budget with one week left in the session.

The new budget includes cuts in medicaid benefits for more than 90,000 Missourians.

Republican lawmakers, including budget committee member Allen Icet from St. Louis County, maintained the cuts are necessary to balance the budget.

" Difficult decisions must be made. We don't have many options, and I believe we are taking the best option available."

The budget now await Governor Matt Blunt's signature.

If signed, the budget will go into effect on July first.

After weeks of debate, legislators passed the final budget.

Under the new budget, 90,000 Missourians will be cut from the medicaid program.

Democrats argued against the large cuts for low and middle-income and disabled Missourians.

But Republicans say the cuts are needed to balance the budget.
