Bond calls for funding of early childhood program

Senator Kit Bond came back to Missouri today with a plan to devote federal tax dollars to a Missouri-grown early childhood program. Tim Carnahan has more from the State Capitol.

Bond says he will ask the federal government for more than 400 million tax dollars to expand state run Parents as Teachers programs.

Bond founded the early childhood program in 1980, when he was Missouri's governor.

In the program, parent educators like Amy Alderman visit the homes of young children to equip parents for parenthood, and prep young minds for school.

Bond got a standing ovation at the State Capitol from an audience of parents and educators supporting the program.

In the program, parent educators visit the homes of young chidren to help parents prepare their kids for school.

And now, Bond has proposed using more than 400 million federal tax dollars to increase national participation.

Senator Kit Bond has unveiled legislation devoting hundreds of millions of dollars to help families with young children. Tim Carnahan has more from the Capitol.

The program Parents as Teachers matches families with parent educators who offer advice encouraging healthy childhood development.

Bond approved the program twenty-five years ago as governor.

Now, every state in the country now has at least one chapter.

Bond says his more than 400 million dollar federal funding plan would increase membership by over two million children.
