Low Turnout at Missouri Primary Polls

Less than fifteen percent of registered Missourians voted in yesterday's presidential primary. Matt Johnson is at the State Capitol.

The primary is one of only three in Missouri's history.

This year's turnout was the lowest ever.

The state is required to spend taxpayers' money on the primary.

Republican Rep. David Pearce does not agree with that costly requirement.

Contents: "Who is not going to have that three and a half million dollars...with all the cuts we've had...it could have gone to education, social services...it just wasn't a good time in my opinion."

Pearce proposed a bill to abolish the primary in 2003, but it failed.

Turnout was more than 300,000 voters shy of the projected total.
