. Missouri's House votes to block the governor's order to force state workers to pay unions (01/21/04)

JEFFERSON CITY - By a near party-line vote, the House approved a resolution to suspend the governor's executive order allowing unions to collect service fees from non-union state government workers.

The rule had been suspended by the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, but that suspension expires in March if not continued by the legislature.

If the resolution is approved by the Senate, it can be vetoed by the governor. The House did not approve the resolution with the two-thirds vote that would be necessary to override the governor's veto.

    . Education and life sciences get top mention in state of the state (01/21/04)

    JEFFERSON CITY - Along with proposing a budget aimed at restoring education funds to 2003 levels, Gov. Bob Holden highlighted his concerns for education funding and investing in the life sciences in his address to the House Wednesday.

    His proposed budget is based on tax increases that couldn't make it passed the legislature last year.

    JEFFERSON CITY - Tax increases the legislature rejected last year were proposed again by Gov. Bob Holden in his State of the State address Wednesday.

    The governor's proposed revenue increases, totaling $689 million per year, are similar to his package of last year that failed in the legislature, including increases in taxes on corporations, gambling and tobacco.

    JEFFERSON CITY - Partisan rancor marked Gov. Bob Holden's State of the State Address Wednesday as his education, job and revenue plans all fell under heavy assualt from Republican leadership.

    The program he announced was essentially the same as the program he put forth last year with a continued emphasis on a tax increase to help fund Missouri's public schools.
