JEFFERSON CITY - Comparing the 2004 Missouri gubernatorial race to giving birth, Claire McCaskill said she is happy with her job as state auditor and plans to pursue the office in 2006.

"A campaign like that is a little bit like childbirth," said McCaskill. "You have the baby and it's so painful and you think, I don't know if I ever want to go near my husband again."

However, she did not completely rule out the possibility of running for governor in 2008.

"I am blessed by the opportunity that I had to run, I feel good about the effort we made, I'm proud of what we accomplished," she said.

McCaskill also discussed the her future as auditor under Gov.-elect Matt Blunt.

"I sincerely want our state to do well," said McCaskilll. "I think it would be really tacky of me to be critical of Gov.-elect Blunt at this point, that is not going to be my style."

She said she hopes future audits during the Blunt administration will be taken as constructive criticism rather than political statements.

"We've done some really tough audits on Gov. Carnahan and Gov. Holden and we'll do some really tough audits on Gov. Blunt," she said.

By ending "political bomb throwing" and leaving a negative and costly campaign in the past, McCaskill said she wants to focus on the problems in Missouri state government.

With Democrats now in the minority, McCaskill said her party is working towards unity. She said nothing promotes cooperation more than losing.

"Nobody's throwing elbows right now to get ahead of each other."
