Judge Ronnie White to Make History

Republicans in the legislature discovered today (Wednesday) that Missouri's Supreme Court will be lead by a man who testified against John Ashcroft in his confirmation hearings.

Christopher Shields has the story from Jefferson City.

In the state of the judiciary address lawmakers learned Judge Ronnie White will become Missouri's first black Chief Justice.

Nominated in 1997 for a federal judgeship, White's nomination was rejected through efforts led by then-senator John Ashcroft.

In 2000, White testified against Ashcroft during his conformation hearings for Attorney General.

White will take over as Chief Justice July first.

Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Steven Limbaugh told lawmakers who will succeed him on July first.

Judge Ronnie White will become Missouri's first black Chief Justice.

Limbaugh says this announcement is long overdue.

White rose to national prominence in 1999 when his nomination for a federal judgeship was rejected by the senate through efforts lead by then-Senator John Ashcroft.
