More than 1,700 jobs in public schools eliminated

The state Department of Education reports at least 1,700 certificated jobs in public schools disappeared this school year.

Department spokesperson Jim Morris says the findings came from a survey sent to all state superintendents.

Contents: "FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS, MANY OF THEM ARE DEPENDENT UPON STATE AID TO PAY TEACHERS' SALARIES. AND WHEN THE MONEY BEGINS TO SHRINK THEY HAVE VERY LITTLE CHOICE EXCEPT TO START TRIMMING STAFF. AND THAT MEANS FEWER TEACHERS, LARGER CLASSES."

This number includes teachers, administrators and all other professional positions in schools and Morris says schools fear even worse job cuts next year.

He adds that the survey had been taken at Gov. Holden's request to build support for a tax increase to raise funds for education.
