Conceal and carry not so new

Missourians gain the right to carry concealed weapons next month, continuing a nationwide trend that began in 1987. Ann Hynek has the story.

Missouri is the 36th state to adopt a conceal and carry law after the legislature overrode the governor's veto.

One man says is was a long time coming.

Contents: "Missouri was one of the few holdout states; more than two dozen states have passed similar laws since 1987, when Florida became what we call the new wave of conceal and carry states."

Florida was the first state to allow its citizens to have concealed weapons in 1987.

Former Florida House Representative Ron Johnson said conceal and carry legislation began after a rise in violent crime in that state.

Statistics recorded by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement show that firearm related crime has decreased since 1987.
