The Missouri Senate gives first round approval to a near half-billion dollar tax increase.

Justin Herndon has more.

A major victory today for Senator Morris Westfall and his bill for a sales and gasoline tax increase.

Westfall says he remains cautiously optimistic with the time left to pass the bill entirely but he's happy with where its at now.

The bill still faces one more vote in the Senate before going to the House.

If passed it will eventually need the approval of the people in Missouri.

A major tax increase is one step closer to coming to a popular vote.

Justin Herndon has more from Jefferson City.

Senator Morris Westfall got enough support from the Missouri Senate to move his bill for a sales and gasoline tax increase foward.

Even with the victory, though, he says nothing is for sure yet.

The bill would raise one half billion dollars in extra revenue to help improve Missouri's interstates and roads.

Missourians could soon see a tax increase on their ballot.

Senate Transportation Chairman Morris Westfall scored a huge victory for the revenue going toward Missouri's roads.

Still, his bill calling for a half-billion dollar tax increase faces a large hurdle with the number of days left in the session.

Westfall says he thinks the bill will go to the House by the end of the week.

After that, the bill still needs a final vote by the Senate and eventually approval from the taxpayers.
