House Democrats dislike a Republican school funding plan

February 7, 2002

Missouri House Democrats say funding for state schools should stay the same...Republicans want a change.

Michelle Wirth has more from Jefferson City.

Right now, schools get money from the foundation formula.

The formula is funded through gambling and general revenue money.

House Republicans say the formula should be funded, but say gaming money should go into a separate fund directly for schools.

St. Louis County Democrat Barbara Fraser says the formula is good because it takes poorer school districts into account.

Contents: Some School districts get as little as 2-hundred dollars per pupil and some of them get $4000 per pupil. To give every student in the state a set equal amount is not equitable.

Fraser also says taking gaming money out of the trust fund wouldn't allow the formula to be fully funded. From Jefferson City, I'm Michelle Wirth.

Right now, state schools are funded through the foundation formula.

That formula is funded with money from general revenue and gambling.

Republicans, like Charlie Shields say the formula should be fully funded...but they want to take gambling out and establish a separate trust fund for education.

But Democrats say if the trust fund passes the house there won't be enough money to fully fund the foundation formula.
