A diesel fuel tax increase failed to gain senate approval.
Missy Shelton has more.
Supporters of a three cent diesel fuel tax increase argued truckers should pay their share for damaging highways.
During debate on the tax increase, St Louis County senator John Schneider explained why Missouri's diesel tax remained lower than neighboring states like Nebraska.
Despite Schneider's comments, senators defeated the fuel tax increase by a near two to one margin.
Opponents of the increase prevailed with arguments like the one from rural senator David Klindt...someone who used to own and operate big trucks.
But Klindt's argument did little to persuade Columbia senator Ken Jacob.
He says with a tremendous need for transportation funding, he has little sympathy for truckers who don't want to pay more in the way of higher taxes and fees.
The diesel fuel tax increase was part of a package of amendments aimed at the trucking industry.
All the amendments failed.
