Holden wants Cardinals to stay in St. Louis

Governor Holden says he is surprised that St. Louis Cardinal President Mark Lamping says the best home for the Cardinals is in downtown St. Louis.

Governor Holden says that he is still in support of funding a new Cardinals stadium with state money.

This comes one day after the Cardinal's president announces that he has been working with private developers to stay in downtown St. Louis.

Holden says that he wants to put together a package that will work for the Cardinals, but also the taxpayers of Missouri.

Holden says he is glad to see that the Cardinals want to stay downtown and is looking forward to working with them.

Governor Holden says that he is surprised for Mark Lamping, the Cardinals President, to say so early that he intends on keeping the Cardinals downtown.

Lamping has had proposals from cities, counties and private developers, but the Governor says he is still interested in using state money to fund the new Cardinal's stadium.

Holden says he looks forward to working with the Cardinals.

This spring a bill to build a new stadium for the Cardinals passed in the Senate, but died in the house.

Holden made this announcement one day after the Cardinals President Mark Lamping says he believes a new stadium will be built downtown.

Lamping's comments were very different from the one's he made a month ago when he said that the Cardinals were considering other sites.

Holden says that he wants to put together a package that works for the Cardinals and for teh taxpayers of Missouri.

In May, a bill that would have built the Cardinals a new stadium died in the house.
