JEFFERSON CITY - State Rep. Jon Dolan, R-Lake St. Louis, suggested extending U.S. Rep. Richard Gephardt's district farther north and west and adding Cole County to the 9th district in a sparsely attended public hearing on congressional redistricting Wednesday night.
Dolan submitted a new map of redrawn district lines at the Senate Redistricting Committee hearing. Calling his map a "working document," Dolan said it "represents much less drastic change" in current district lines than other maps that have been submitted to the commmittee for consideration.
"I think peace will reign," he said. "I think some of the plays that are being made, maybe, by partisan Galiaths can be made up by bipartisan or fair-minded David."
Dolan said his map takes into account population shifts reflected in 2000 U.S. Census statistics. Those numbers indicate that 25,000 people must be added to Gephardt's 3rd district.
The statistics also show that both Democratic urban districts -- Karen McCarthy's 5th district in Kansas City and Lacy Clay's 3rd district in St. Louis -- must lose people when the lines are redrawn.
Republican U.S. Rep. Sam Graves and state Rep. Bob May, R-Rolla, also testified at the hearing.
The final public hearing for the Senate committee will be held Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the St. Louis Community College Forest Park campus.
