Debate over medical privacy laws comes to the Showme State.

Medical records could not be disclosed to anyone without written consent under a Senate bill.

Cara Karunaratne has more from Jefferson City.

Supporters of this bill say it is necessary to protect personal health information from people that might take advantage of it, such as marketers or financial institutions.

But some people are concerned that the bill puts too many restrictions on the disclosure of health information.

Mike Donelmeyer of the American Insurance Association says the language of the bill is too broad and doesn't target specific abuses.

Donelmeyer says he wants the bill deferred until the U.S. Congress decides on privacy rights.
