. Governor Bob Holden names redistricting commissions and angers Republicans (03/29/01)
JEFFERSON CITY - Republicans are upset because one of the people Gov. Holden named to the commissions asked not to be considered a month ago.

That decision caused tension in the House.

. Congressional redistricting efforts begin in Missouri's legislature. (03/28/01)
JEFFERSON CITY - With less than eight weeks left in the legislative session, House and Senate committees have begun work on redrawing the state's nine congressional districts.

Legislative action had to wait until the U.S. Census bureau released the state's population figures.

If the legislature fails to redraw the districts before it adjourns on May 18, the governor can call a special session or the courts will have to draw the districts.

State legislative districts are drawn by a special bi-partisan panel with members selected by the governor from a panel nominated by the two major political parties

    JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri House gave preliminary approval to a resolution that would take St. Louis City out from under the control of the state.

    Opponents say it does not do enough to deal with the real problems of the city; corruption and poverty.

    . The House approves a couple of new freedoms for highway drivers. (03/27/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri's House has given first-round approval to letting adults drive motorcycles without helmets and to allowing tinting be applied to automobile windows.

    The legislative passed a similar motorcycle helmet repeal for adults in 1999. But it was vetoed by the governor after the Highway Patrol superintendent had voiced objections.

    Both the motorcycle-helmet bill and the window-tinting bill require one more vote in the House before going to the Senate.

    . A study of state government's autos recommends tighter management. (03/26/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - A council on government efficiency has recommended a new government agency to centralize management of state autos and travel by state employees.

    The council, chaired by the lieutenant governor, reported that currently the state does not even know for sure how many autos it owns.
