You've heard of "Mad Cow" disease. Now, one Missouri lawmaker wants to prevent a sickness from coming here that could be labeled "Mad Elk" disease. Aaron Cummins has the story from Jefferson City--
It's real-name is Chronic Wasting Disease.
And, Hazelwood Representative Mike Reid says researchers think it's similar to Mad Cow disease.
Reid filed a bill that would place a ten-year ban on the introduction of wild elk into Missouri-- mainly because he fears the disease could spread to cattle or deer.
But, the Conservation Department says this bill is unnecessary and set-up to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

A Missouri lawmaker wants to ban introduction of wild elk into the state because of an illness that could be dubbed "Mad Elk" disease. Aaron Cummins has the story from Jefferson City--
The sickness is called Chronic Wasting Disease or CWD and it effects elk and deer.
Hazelwood Representative Mike Reid says it's already shown up in Western states.
But, unlike Mad Cow, a link between CWD and illness in humans hasn't been established.
But, Reid says his fear is the disease could be transmitted to the state's whitetail deer population or to cattle.
