Disease is similar to "Mad Cow"

You've heard of "Mad Cow" disease. Now, one Missouri lawmaker wants to prevent a sickness from coming here that could be labeled "Mad Elk" disease. Aaron Cummins has the story from Jefferson City--

Contents: Reid says some researchers think both CWD and Mad Cow come from a disease in sheep.

Reid filed a bill that would place a ten-year ban on the introduction of wild elk into Missouri-- mainly because he fears the disease could spread to cattle or deer.

But, the Conservation Department says this bill is unnecessary and set-up to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

The sickness is called Chronic Wasting Disease or CWD and it effects elk and deer.

Hazelwood Representative Mike Reid says it's already shown up in Western states.

But, unlike Mad Cow, a link between CWD and illness in humans hasn't been established.
