Commitee OKs mobile-home eviction bill

JEFFERSON CITY - Less than one year after Columbia's Walnut Woods mobile home park residents were given 60 days to move out of their homes, a bill requiring more advanced notice received House committee approval Wednesday.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Vicki Riback Wilson, D-Columbia. It would require landlords to give 180 days notice to residents before a mobile home could be required to be moved off the landlord's property.

Wilson said mobile home owners need the extra time to reconnect utilities, find locations and, in some cases, move children into new school districts.

The bill passed out of committee on a party-line, eight to six vote, with Democrats favoring the bill.

Rep. Matt Bartle, R-Lee's Summit, said the 180 day notice period places too many restrictions on property owners.

But, Bartle said he would support a shortened time limit of three months or less notice.

The western Missouri Republican also said he questioned whether the state should interfere with a lawful contract between a landowner and mobile home owner.

The measure now goes to the full House.

This is not the first time Wilson has sponsored this legislation. Last year's bill never made it past committee.
