Big names and major players step up to the plate to support a new Cardinals stadium paid partly by ticket sales tax.

Supporters say it's more than a baseball park...it's an economic boost for the entire state. Under the senate proposal, funding for the new stadium would come from the ticket sales tax, money that currently goes to the state treasury. Cardinals President Mark Lamping says this proposal will benefit the state by creating 6 blocks of new development including housing, parking and a new city aquarium alongside the new ballpark.

Contents: Lamping says that while this proposal involves a sports team, the idea should be examined like any other economic development proposal.

Aside from the ecomonic concerns of maintaining the aging Busch stadium, bill supporters say the current facility is inadequate for handicapped fans, fans looking for decent lower priced seating, and even for the team itself.

If legislation is passed, sponsors anticipate the new stadium would be ready for fans on the opening day of the 2005 season.
