Meanwhile, Republicans touted John Ashcroft's experience as a selling-point for the incumbent senator.
Missouri Republican Party Director John Hancock says Ashcroft did the right thing by suspending his campaign.
The latest poll numbers show Mel, or more precisely Jean Carnahan, with about a 7 percent lead over Ashcroft.
