    . Jean Carnahan will announce her decision Monday (10/27/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Jean Carnahan said she will announce Monday whether she will accept a U.S. Senate appointment offered if her late husband, Mel Carnahan, wins Missouri's Senate race.

    "Our family has always made important decisions together," she said in a Friday statement. "This weekend, I will gather with my family at our farm to discuss the U.S. Senate seat for which my husband was running. I will announce my decision Monday."

    Mel Carnahan, who died in an Oct. 16 plane crash, remains on the ballot. If he gets more votes than GOP opponent Sen. John Ashcroft, Gov. Roger Wilson has said he intends to appoint Jean Carnahan to serve in the late governor's place.

    . Racial profiling committee meets (10/26/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The first in a series of meetings on racial profiling took place in Jefferson City.

    The Attorney General Jay Nixon is in charge of the committee. It was established under a law passed earlier this year by Missouri's legislature that requires police to report the ethnic backgroun of those that they stop for traffic violations.

    . Proposition B backers hit with lawsuit (10/27/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - In an ironic twist, the backers of tax-supported political campaign initiative Proposition B have been hit with a lawsuit charging campaign finance violations.

    Associated Industries of Missouri filed a lawsuit in St. Louis City Circuit Court against Missouri Voters for Fair Elections.

    . Website offers auction service for 2000 presidential votes (10/26/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Over 560 self-described Missourians have offered to sell their 2000 presidential vote to the highest bidder on a foreign-based website.

    The website, operating out of Vienna, Austria, is called www.vote-auction.com. The site has been the focus of controversy and has been threatened with lawsuits, but continues to operate as Election Day approaches.

    . Constitutional change would consolidate state's savings and make it harder to access (10/26/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - A constitutional amendment on the November ballot would consolidate the state's savings accounts and formalize access requirements.

    The amendment would create a general reserve fund and maintain an estimated $420 million balance. The account could only be accessed if two-thirds of the legislature approves.

    . Women could deliver election to Democrats (10/26/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Political experts say Gov. Roger Wilson's announcement that he would appoint Jean Carnahan to the U.S. Senate could send more Missouri women and independent voters to the polls, tipping the tight presidential, senatorial and statewide races to the Democrats.

    Ken Warren, political scientist at St. Louis University, said the possibility of a woman in the U.S. Senate could deliver Democrats the women's vote in Missouri because women support women at the polls. And in Missouri, women make up about 53 percent of the vote.

    JEFFERSON CITY - When Richard Martin stepped down as the Missouri Democratic Party's executive director to become an exec at Sprint PCS, he thought he would never go back to the hurlyburly of politics.

    But that was before state Treasurer Bob Holden called to ask Martin to manage his gubernatorial bid.

    On the Republican side, in his sixth campaign, Brad Scott is finally realizing his goal of running a statewide race.

    Scott, GOP gubernatorial candidate Jim Talent's campaign manager, said this race -- his first statewide -- is probably his last.

    . The insurance industry warns motorists to be on the watch for deer. (10/24/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri's insurance industry organization warns that this month and next month are the dangerous months for auto collisions with deer.

    Last year, the Conservation Department reported more than 8,000 accidents with deer.

    . Ashcroft reaches out (to TV cameras) for 12 minutes (10/24/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Sen. John Ashcroft, campaigning at a soup kitchen here, urged Missourians to use this time of mourning for late governor Mel Carnahan to reach out and help others.

    For Ashcroft, reaching out meant unpacking food in front of rolling TV cameras for less than thirteen minutes.

    . Republicans denounce Wilson's announcement (10/24/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Republicans charged Gov. Roger Wilson was unfair and possibly illegal when he announced Tuesday that he would appoint Jean Carnahan to the U.S. Senate if her late husband wins the election.

    Some Republicans said Democrats should seek a write-in candidacy. Others charged Wilson with putting political concerns ahead of Jean Carnahan's need for time to mourn.

    JEFFERSON CITY - Jean Carnahan has never held public office, yet in two weeks, the first lady may be a U.S. Senator.

    Despite her lack of a public legislative record, Carnahan has ventured into politics, taking a leadership role, especially, in children's issues.

    JEFFERSON CITY - On Monday, a growing number of major Democrats said they wanted the widow of Missouri's late governor to be the stand-in candidate for the U.S. Senate.

    Among those endorsing a Jean Carnahan candidacy was Missouri's two female statewide officials, the state auditor and the secretary of state.

    Mel Carnahan's name will remain on the ballot. If Carnahan wins a majority of the votes, the governor would appoint someone for the first two years of the term.

    Gov. Roger Wilson has scheduled a news conference Tuesday to discuss the matter, but he gave no indication whether he would announce the person he would appoint.
