Lawmakers question validity of banning daycare on casino boats

A proposal to ban daycare facilities on gambling boats is raising questions with lawmakers. Francine Krantz has that story from Jefferson City.

Several members of the House Children and Families committee, have expressed skepticism over a proposal that would outlaw childcare facilities on riverboat casinos.

Raytown representative Ralph Monaco said the committee should make sure they are not outlawing daycare centers at other facilities before they pass the bill.

But Missouri Family Network Representative Kerry Messer says he is concerned about any business, particularly gambling, that operates a childcare center.

St. Charles representative Charles Gross says he thinks it is inappropriate to have children present in a gambling environment.

Gross has introduced a bill that would outlaw daycare facilities from riverboat casinos in Missouri. He says children may be negatively affected if they are kept in close proximity to the casino floor.

Contents: He says that it's not only gambling that is the problem, but alcohol and tobacco may also be consumed in these environments and that is not a safe environment for children.
