One lawmaker from Southwest Missouri wants people to pay more for speeding in a construction zone.
Missy Shelton has more from Jefferson City.
How many times have you been irritated driving past construction zone signs only to see there aren't any crews out working?
It's happened enough times that many drivers speed through construction zones, thinking there aren't any workers present because signs remain posted even when crews have left for the day.
Senator Doyle Childers, a Republican from Reeds Spring says that's a problem.
Childers wants to increase the penalty for speeding through a construction zone from 35 dollars to 250 dollars.
But he says he's not set on that amount, he just wants to get people's attention.
And Childers is also urging the Highway Department to be more vigilant about posting signage only when construction is going on.
He says that will ease the frustration of many drivers.
No one spoke in opposition to his proposal at a recent hearing. Childers says he believes lawmakers will consider this to be a serious issue and will pass his bill.
