January 13, 2000

On the same day Missouri's Democratic Governor endorsed the campaign to crack down on drunk driving, Senate Democratic leaders gave less than enthusastic support..and downright opposition to the idea.

The key proposal would lower the legal blood alcohol content from .10 to .08.

But some Democratic leaders argue the bill does not effectively fight drunk driving.

Instead St. Louis County Senator Wayne Goode says:

Missouri senators never voted on similiar .08 legislation last year because it became held up in committee hearings.

St. Louis County Senator Wayne Goode raised concern over a bill that lowers the legal driving blood alcohol content from .10 to .08 in favor of his own drunk driving legislation.

A bill lowering the legal driving blood alcohol limit from 1.0 to .08 drew criticism from St. Louis County Senator Wayne Goode.

Senator Goode says it just won't help to get rid of drunk drivers.

But it will give insight to the success of his own bill.

Contents: SENATOR GOODE DOESN'T BELIEVE .08 BILL DESERVES CREDIT AS LITMUS TEST.

Instead, Senator Goode hopes his own bill increasing penalties against drivers blowing a 1.5 will do much more to curb drunk driving.

This is Laetitia Thompson reporting from the State Capitol.
