Lawmakers want to clean up initiative petition process.

Missouri lawmakers want to clean up the process of initiative petitions...a process where the public gathers signatures on a petition to propose a new law or amend the constitution. Jung Wha Yoon has more from the state capitol.

A bill under consideration attempts to do away with fraud, such as forging signatures, in initiative petitions.

In order to do so, the bill requires circulators to be a registered voter in a county for at least 15 days.

Contents: This minimizes people landing on plane, registering to vote, collecting signatures, then leaving two days later.

If the bill passes, any petition distributed by a paid circulator would be clearly marked.

But opponents of the bill say they have found no evidence that paid circulators commit more fraud.
