State sales tax drops three percent

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, the state sales tax drops from about four percent to a little over one percent, but not on all items. From Jefferson City, Beejal Patel reports on exactly what foods are eligible for a tax cut.

Don't expect to get a tax cut on all items on your grocery list. The tax cut covers fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, eggs, dairy products and other items covered by federal food stamps.

But, you'll have to pay full tax for items such as alcohol, soap, toothpaste, paper towels and even hot cooked crabs.

Kay Dinolfo, a Revenue Department spokeswoman, says under the state tax cut law, Missouri must follow federal guidelines on how to categorize foods.
