A proposal of about 1.5 million dollars to fund a program to crack-down on car emissions didn't make it past the House.

Opposition came from those who said the program would not have solved air pollution problems.

But bill sponsor Representative Phil Tate argued it's a health issue that needs to be addressed.

The House rejected funding that would have set up a program to control vehicle emissions.

Opposition came from those who said they felt the measure would not be effective.

Representative Laurie Donovan said this measure is not enough.

You're still going to be out of attainment simply because St Louis is in that corrider of Highway 70 going through it. There are trucks and cars and everything else that are going through there that have never had their emissions tested. [238K WAV file - Laurie Donovan]
