SCHOOL BUSES WILL IMPROVE SAFETY

JEFFERSON CITY - The proposal of Missouri's governor to improve safety of children who ride school buses cleared the Missouri House Wednesday.

The House approved and sent back to the Senate with changes a measure to require crossing-control arms on school buses.

Under the bill, all new buses would be required to have crossing arms on the front bumper of the school buses no later than August of next year.

The purpose of the arm is to keep make sure that passengers walking in front of the bus are far enough away to be visible to the bus driver.

The bill was prompted by the death last year of a St. Louis area child who was run over by a school bus.

The bill also requires that before discharging students, the bus must be stopped in a location that is visible to other vehicles for at least 500 feet.

The measure now goes back to the Senate for review of changes the House made in the version the Senate had approved earlier this year.
