Senate committee expands family planning funding

A Senate committee has rejected the House version of the health department budget that would restrict family planning funding to public agencies. Susan Batt has the details from Jefferson City.

With a close vote, the committee said any private organization could receive state family planning money. This means that both Planned Parenthood and religious groups would be eligible - but they would not be allowed to use that money to directly fund abortions.

Kansas City Senator Harry Wiggins proposed the changes.

The proposed budget would also give money to local health agencies, hospitals and doctors to provide pregnancy testing and prenatal care.

A senate committee rejected the House approved health department budget which restricts family planning funding to public agencies.

Under the Senate version, private organizations like Planned Parenthood and religious groups could receive money - as long as it is not used to pay for abortions.

Kansas City Senator Harry Wiggins supports the changes.

The changes passed the committee by a close eight to six vote. Now the budget moves to the full Senate for debate.
