August 30, 1996

State Capital Bureau

The fight against tobacco companies is already a big issue in some November election battles nationwide, but Missouri's candidates for attorney general actually see eye to eye.

Adam Czerwinski (chair-vin-ski) reports from Jefferson City.

Republican Mark Bredemeier is running against incumbent Jay Nixon to fill the Attorney General's job.

But Bredemeier seems to support Nixon's decision to hold off on Missouri filing a law suit against tobacco companies...to recover health care money spent on smokers.

Bredemeier disagrees with 15 states already involved in this kind of suit.

He says an expensive lawsuit is not the best way to spend taxpayer money.

Contents: Mark Bredemeier says that Missouri should invest the money in education and awareness programs to reduce the cost of the health care of smokers.

Missouri's Health Department would like to see the state try and get back the money it spent on treating smoking related illnesses.

The department estimates that amount at 152-million dollars for 1993 alone.
