The Missouri House has rejected the Democratic candidate for House speaker, leaving a leadership crisis in the House as it enters the 2nd week of the 1996 legislative session. Phill Brooks has the story from Jefferson City:
The House vote clearly caught Democrats off guard.
You could hear it in the hesitation of out-going House Speaker Bob Griffin who announced the results:
Griffin immeidately gaveled the session to a close...but with no clear indication just how Democrats are going to achieve party unity.
No caucus of House Democrats has been scheduled.
The Democratic speaker candidate, Sam Leake, refused interviews and left the captiol by early evening.
His office said he was taking his wife back home.
