Safe Schools Bill Headed to Governor

Violent and disruptive students in the classroom would face tough criminal penalties under a measure passed in the House. Adam Levine reports from Jefferson City.

Capitalizing on the public's fear of school violence, the Missouri Legislature passed the safe schools bill from conference committee. The bill makes any knowlingly committed assault on school property a felony assault, if the prosecutor desires to pursue the charge. The bill also ensures that records of troublesome children will follow them around from school to school. For those completely kicked out of their normal school, the bill allocates $10 million for the creation and funding of alternative schools. Democrat representative Lloyd Daniel of Kansas City says the school system is out of touch.

Bill Sponsor Steve McLuckie of Kansas City says he wants schools free from violence for the students and parents of Missouri.
