Color Coordinate Your Car

JEFFERSON CITY - If you've gotten tired of the maroon splotch on your car from Missouri's license plates, you'll have a chance to tell state officials the color scheme you'd prefer.

The state's License Plate Redesign Advisory Committee decided Tuesday to seek the public's suggestions for a new design for the vehicle tags.

"We'll find out what the public wants," said Janette Lohman, director of Missouri's Revenue Department. "We'll give them the parameters that relate to costs and then see what we come up with."

The committee, which includes representatives from the state legislature, the Revenue Department, and the Corrections Department, decided on technical considerations concerning the material to be used for the new plates, as well as the type and size of lettering. These basic standards will now be presented to the public for input on the actual design of the new license plate.

"We're going to ask for any kind of input the public would like to submit," Lohman said. Public meetings will be held in Kansas City on December 4, St. Louis on December 5, and Springfield on December 12.

The state statute includes the provision that the new plates be "aesthetically attractive," according to Lohman. She said her office gets 10 to 15 letters per week from citizens requesting plates that are more pleasing to the eye. "Although taste will vary, there seems to be a wide consensus that our plates are dull and boring," Lohman said.
